“Das kommt mir spanisch vor”

“Das kommt mir spanisch vor”

Where English-speaking people say “That seems Greek to me”, Germans use “Das kommt mir spanisch vor” (“That seems Spanish to me”) to refer to incomprehensible and difficult matters. The expression was coined in the 16th century by Charles V. Being the country’s new king, he became acquainted with #Spain, and the customs and the #Spanish language seemed strange and incomprehensible to the Roman-German emperor.

At #espaTrans, we are looking forward to contributing to various language projects.
